Finance Still Strong, Except For First Home Buyers

Official ABS figures for the September quarter reveal, despite the recent interest rate rise, housing finance was up by 4 per cent to more than $11.6 billion in September. The average loan size continued to grow strongly, increasing by $3500 to $189,100 in September. The number of first home buyers continued a pattern of general decline, since the high of 25.8 per cent in July 2001, to a record low of 13.3 per cent in September.
